Over Her Dead Body

Description

She came into my office just like any other client. Her skin was as pale as freshly fallen snow, her hair a rich chestnut brown, and eyes a dark green, like emeralds that had lost their luster. As my assistant brought the brunette inside, her escort Detective Harris walked up to me. “Another patient for you, Doc.” “And does my late-night visitor have a name?” I asked as I adjusted my glasses. “Jane Doe, at least for the time being. We found her lying in a back alley between Second Street & Main. No purse, no jewelry; looks like a robbery gone bad.” “Now now Detective, let’s not jump to any conclusions. I’ll perform a full examination on our guest, and see what she can tell us about her attacker.”
“Fair enough,” Harris replied, pulling a smoke from his trench coat pocket. “Let me know if you find anything.” “Of course. Now then, if we’re done here, would you mind taking that outside?” I asked, pointing to the detective’s lighter. He nodded and left the office, shutting the door behind him. I then turned to my assistant, who had been busy making Miss Doe comfortable on my autopsy table. “Elias, fetch my tools for me, will you?” “Of course Doctor,” he replied. As he hurriedly went to retrieve my instruments, I looked back at Jane and sighed. It was going to be a long night…

Another short story illustration, this time for a forensic murder mystery.
I shelved this story a while back, but figured it might be worth sharing.
